RIVERS OMBUDSMAN STATEMENT ON THE NEWLY APPOINTED ACTING IGP

STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF USMAN ALKALI BABA AS THE NEW ACTING INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE

1. I extend my heartiest congratulations to Usman Alkali Baba on his appointment as the new Acting Inspector General of Police  by President Muhammadu Buhari.

2. Baba who is an accomplished officer with over three decades of patriotic and selfless service to Nigeria is a fellow of the National Defence College and the 21st indigenous Inspector General of  Police  by his new appointment.

3. By carefully charting his course, steering his craft, tracking his progress and learning to improve his performance, Baba has reached a great place in his career. This new position will undoubtedly be an impressive addition to his already decorated career spanning almost forty years. He is a great fit for this new role and will surely thrive by harnessing all material and human resources of the Force towards improving security and enforcing law and order.

4. Ag. IGP Baba is deeply versed in policing and related matters having held a number of strategic positions in the Force including Ag. Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Finance and Administration, the Force Secretary, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone-5 Benin, Zone-4 Makurdi and Zone-7 Abuja and more at different times. With his wealth of experience and excellent policing track records, I have no doubt that he will improve the fortune of the Force and place it on a pedestal.

5. Stepping into a new position is an exciting feat and I’m delighted that Baba has this opportunity. However, it is important to note that with his new position comes a higher responsibility and expectations. It is against this backdrop that I implore the new Acting IGP to hit the ground running and ensure an improved and better Force by pursuing frameworks and policy directions that takes police welfare seriously as this is one of the major ways of boosting the morale of police personnel, thereby, curbing insecurity.

6. I strongly believe that Baba's appointment at this critical period of surging insecurity is no coincidence as his expertise and experience will come handy in arresting the situation across the nation.

7. I thank President Buhari for finding him worthy to head the Nigerian Police Force at this critical time in our history. Nigerians are urged to uphold the new Ag. Inspector General of Police in their prayers and give him the required support to succeed in his new assignment.
